Northern Ontario School of Medicine

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is committed to the education of high quality physicians and health professionals, and to international recognition as a leader in distributed, learner-centred, community-engaged medical education and research. The inclusion of NOSM in the NPP Recruit and Retain project is signficant for several reasons. In particular, NOSM is a medical school specifically established to meet the needs of a remote and rural area of Northern Canada. The first Canadian medical school established with a social accountability mandate, NOSM engages in partnerships with over 70 communities. Typically, over 90% of students admitted to the NOSM MD program are from Northern Ontario. Guided by a vision of Innovative Eduction and Research for a Healthier North, NOSM is graduating physicians and other health professionals who are fully acquainted with the rigours and rewards of medical practice in Northern Ontario within remote and culturally diverse settings.
